A Trashy Subject - How Much Trash Do You Make?
Did you know that every one of your neighbors generated five pounds of trash yesterday? And the day before. And the day before that. And so did you! We are all generating five pounds of trash every day. If we don't do something about it soon, we will all drown in our own garbage.
Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of the problem, we have over 300 million people in the country and we generate an average of five pounds of garbage each, that's a lot of trash!
One piece of trash that we over-use in America is plastic bags, like those you get from the grocery store. A plastic bag takes longer to degrade than the expected life span of the average U.S. citizen. That's right, that plastic bag will clog up the environment for about 100 years before it degrades.
One solution is to produce less trash; another is to try to produce trash that will degrade more rapidly.
Containers, packaging and bags that decompose more rapidly are labeled – “biodegradable.” The definition of “biodegradable” is “capable of decomposing under natural conditions.” By looking for the biodegradable label and producing less trash, you'll be doing your part to help environment.
Producing less trash could mean recycling products or learning how containers and other items can be reused for other purposes. Eating more natural foods such as fruits that come complete with their own containers compliments of nature. And simply consuming less is the surest way to reduce the amount a trash you generate.
Helping your friends and family to reduce their trash will make a big difference too!
